After a year and 216 days, Second Citizen Forums close down unexpectedly two days ago. According to Aimee Weber’s article, the infamous post of the account called Sloppybot led to this unexpected event. Shorty after the Copybot incident (a bot that copied objects and avatars without asking permission), Sloppybot posted a fragment of a code promising that this was only a fragment of a script-theft tool that will be sold for L$10.000 through SLExchange. Shortly thereafter, Mother Fic, the admin of Second Citizen took the post down and banned Sloppybot. It turns out that this was a code hacked from SLExchange’s servers and SLExchange asked for Second Citizen to be taken down due to copyright infringement. After almost a year later! How does that happen? The funny thing is that I used the copybot incident in the article that I submitted to Velvet Light Trap and referred to Sloppybot… Who knew that after a week of my submission that Second Citizen Forums would be taken down leaving all my links broken?

Though I was merely a lurker at SC Forums, I kind of feel sad that they are taken down. An era ends with them. Second Life history of a year and a half suddenly disappeared with the forums closing down. No back ups to be had. Talk about Tony Walsh’s proverbial tree.

This should give me a nice break from Second Life which had most of my attention for the last year and a half. It is going to be a nice shift of focus. And I just joined Saijo City, so we’ll see.

Finally I am temporarily done with my writing (until my next conference), so I decided to read all the stuff that I have been keeping in the back burner for awhile. To celebrate this joyous occasion, I started Wikinomics by Don Tapscott and Anthony Williams. So far he doesn’t seem to be saying anything that I don’t know already, but interesting read anyway. I had also read Don Tapscott Growing up Digital three years ago and some of the things he says in that book, especially on Net Generation, is also mentioned here on the early chapters of the book. For some reason, when I first read Growing up Digital, what he was saying about the Net Generation did not bother me as much as it did when I was reading Wikinomics last night. Here’s why:

Growing up Digital, while in some respects is correct in its arguments, set false expectations for me in dealing with my students at Indiana University. Not every day does a graduate student gets to teach her dissertation topic and I was fortunate enough to be given this chance. In Fall 2007, I thought a 100-level seminar called Narratives in the Age of Media Convergence. Set aside all my difficulties in getting the university give me technical support (mind you, IU is among the top ten most-wired universities according to Newsweek), I was a bit surprised to see that my incoming freshmen lacked the media literacy that Tapscott’s book promised me. It was a shock to me as much as it was to them. I kept a blog from the inception of the class to its completion here. To encourage online collaboration I created a class wiki, prepared forums, started a collaborative story project, assigned a blogging assignment as their daily journal, and we read Patchwork Girl as an example of hypertext. The students were in a state of shock the first day, which to my surprise, recovered really quickly. Although all of them had a laptop, most didn’t use it for anything other then to check e-mails. I had instant questions: How are we going to use the Wiki? What do I write in a blog? I have nothing interesting to say. My favorites: How are we going to get graded for the blogs? What if someone deletes all the changes/additions I made in the collaborative story project?”

Is Indiana University an exception to the rule? I think not. I remember Howard Rheingold coming to IU to talk about smart mobs last year and when he was asked about media access and the digital divide, he responded that media access wasn’t the financial ability to buy these technologies anymore, it is being fluent in the literacy of these media. All my students had laptops, some had MACs, a luxury that I didn’t even permit myself, but most had absolutely no idea what to do with it. Which begs the question: where are these kids who grew up digital?

I hate to say it, but anyone who is writing anything on the Internet has effectively given up to right to privacy. So why complain about Google’s crawlers meticulously indexing all the information about you? I have been stunned at times to see my most mundane post being picked up by these bots, google my name and you’ll know who I am, what my interests are, what classes I taught, what comments I posted on blogs, what e-mails I sent to “private” listservs, and even what I ate last night. Seeing this kind of transparency never ceases to surprise me. Every time I realize that some new information is added to the database, I set something somewhere “private.” But you never know where it is going to hit you. I was shocked to see my private e-mails to SL Educators list on the Internet. Assuming everyone knew this, I even debated whether I can use the comments there in my own research without asking permission. When I did ask for permission to, to my better judgement, I realized that other members were just as oblivious to the fact that their posts were being broadcast to the entire world. When I posted comments on Henry Jenkin’s blogs, the next day my comments were at the top of Google search list. Last month I saw that all of my silly Twitter updates were all over the Internet, immediately set the setting to “private.” Now Facebook is going public with profile, so I turn that off too. It seems, the more careful you get, the more susceptible you are. Under all these privacy settings, I feel totally naked. Because somewhere I overlooked something, for sure. Danah Boyd’s recent blog post, controlling your public appearance online
, says that she’s been receiving complaints from her readers that their comments on Boyd’s blog are coming up at the top ranks of Google search. Is it her responsibility to make sure they don’t by resorting to tricks? Not really. If you post a comment on any blog, if you yourself blog, if you send an e-mail to any listserve, or posted your pictures online, you have surrendered your right to privacy. I like to think of it as selling your soul to the devil.

The bad thing about the Internet is that it is like an elephant: it remembers. The bastard never forgets. As I noted before, it is the harshest reputation building tool. One person writes something bad about you and it stays there forever. Or you post one angry comment, it stares at you like an eyesore. One silly comment on Twitter, it is right there up the rank. What is worse is that these comments are taken out of context. So you were joking around with a friend and jokingly called him a name on Twitter, the context is deleted, and your off-color comment remains.

What’s Boyd’s answer? Blog incessantly so that the not-so-good images of you get buried under recent entries, comment on others’ blogs responsibly, say no to Facebook’s public profiling, and treat video just like text because indexing them is only a matter of time. I think these are smart suggestions. Surely the Internet is changing the meaning of privacy as it is changing the meaning of copyright. Why don’t we sell our souls to the devil so at least we get a say in what appears.

When I first started my Second Life, I used to hang out in sex clubs a lot. This is not surprising knowing that your first click on any advertisement in Second Life automatically teleports you to a sex club. Well, I am here to admit that my avatar, Defne Demar, was born in the midst of dancing poles in Belmont (which no longer exists). Then it became a force of habit, I met the coolest people, had the most engaging conversations, made the best friendships in sex clubs. My favorite at the time was Celestia which was by the ocean (I grew up by the sea) with a nice fire in the beach that people gathered around to sit and chat and a gorgeous view of the sunset… Again, closed. I remember meeting a guy in Celestia who was a pilot in RL. After we made friends, he told me that he had been in virtual worlds for years now, mainly he participated in MUDs. Then the conversation got around to cybersex and he told me that sex in SL was nothing compared to the ones he had in MUDs. I was baffled. How can that be? If anything, Second Life is the proud provider of virtual sex. Looking at the media these days, Linden Lab should copyright it, if you ask me. Goons make fun of it and call it "pixel-banging" and grief it as much as they can, but if you consider that you can visually see what you are doing and you can make your avatar look stunningly attractive, surely text-sex can’t be compared to SL… He told me that text-based virtual worlds leave a lot to imagination and can get really intense. Not having been to a MUD myself, I took his word for it.
This conversation was about a year and a half ago. Fast forward time to two weeks ago… No, I didn’t have sex in a MUD, disappointed? Don’t be…
A friend of mine, Ren Reynolds, whom I met at the Ludium conference this year, forwarded to me a friend of his from Terra Nova, Julian Dibbell, who apparently was writing an article on goons and griefers of SL. Julian Dibbell has written a lot on LambdaMOO. I read nothing by him accept his most famous piece "A Rape in Cyberspace" and was intrigued by it at the time primarily because I too am doing my research on disruptive behavior in cyberspace. Anyway, I finally got around to starting the complete book that came out his LambdaMOO days: My Tiny Life. And all of a sudden I realized what I had known all along, that the pilot at Celestia was correct in his assessment after all. The first couple of pages of My Tiny Life hit me like a two-by-four as I realized how emotionally engaging that text-based environments can be. As I was reading how Mr. Bungle had raped a couple of the community members with a voodoo doll in the likeness of an ugly clown, I started remembering my own experiences in SL. One of his victims, while she was declaring that she wanted his ass for what he had done to her, was so upset that apparently started crying at the keyboard.
But for what? No real rape has occurred. Or has it? Do we really dismiss what happens to us in SL as mere pixels? Why do we get worked up over it? Needless to say, having worked with griefers for the past year and a half, I ended up getting griefed a lot. I was the researcher that they were lolling all around. They had nothing but disdain for me. I handled myself pretty well, I think, but Dibbell’s story reminded me of one particular night when I cried myself into the night, asking myself what I have done to deserve this or that whether it is all worth the pain and suffering. It is real, all of it.
I know for a fact that it is real, because I remember in my early days in SL that I actually fell in love for the first time. Lasted for two months before we pulled the plug. But it did happen, it was as exciting as it would have been if we were living in the same house, it gave me the same pain when it was over as it would have if it were a real-life break up. As a matter of fact, I was spending more time with him than I was with my boyfriend at the time (which we soon broke up). But the experience was that intense. After that incident, I was really careful not to get too close to anyone in SL or online. EVER.
My point being is that the mere fact that Dibbell’s story can conjure up all of this (which I had forgotten long since) is the mere proof that text-based worlds can be as engaging as (if not more) their 3D counterparts…and that Dibbell is a hell of a story-teller..

I’ve been quiet lately, but have been slammed with work. I am also making major changes in the direction of my life along with going to conferences and such. So, needless to say, I’ve been neglecting my blog/boyfriend for a bit until my life stabilizes a bit, which may not be any time soon…
I am about to finish and submit an article on Second Life too, the deadline is tomorrow. In my attempt to get the footnotes cited properly and find definitions for some key terminology, I realized that Wikipedia does not really give a good definition to Bot. It has some, but not what I want. When I inquired about this, one of my friends told me they used to be called Daemons, not Bots. What a cool name that explains what these programs really do!!! I love it. Definition in Wikipedia:

"In Unix and other computer multitasking operating systems, a daemon (IPA pronunciation: /’deɪmən/ or /’dimən/[1]) is a computer program that runs in the background, rather than under the direct control of a user; they are usually initiated as processes. Typically daemons have names that end with the letter "d" (for example, syslogd, the daemon that handles the system log, or sshd, which handles the incoming SSH connections)."

Of course this definition does not imply all the mischief they cause, but at least the name suggests it.
